Building silly monsters with our kindergarten buddies.  Lots of laughs and silly creatures!

This morning we were creating creatures out of play dough for a descriptive writing assignment. Want to take a look at what we each made?  Follow the link and be sure to ask your child about the descriptive paragraph that they wrote.

After 3 periods of class time for story planning, students need to complete their story planning page tonight for homework so that they can continue onto their rough copy tomorrow.  To help them out, here is the link to our brainstorming about characteristics people could have, and jobs.

A few short reminders:

  1. Students that had originally ordered hot lunch for Tuesday (but didn't get it because we made a change to our Nature Explorers day) will have a hot lunch tomorrow.
  2. Health unit nurses will be here tomorrow morning for needles (5B only).

Some of the great things about our Nature Explorers field trip today:

Ethan- we went to the wetlands and we found a wasp nest
Anika- we found some bones
Andrea- we found a robins nest that used elk hair
Sam- we had fun because we played a bunch of cool games
Gabe B - I learned that the area we went to had been flooded
Jeremy- we saw part of a wasps nest
We also discovered some older bear scat  and found out that it had been eating grasses and grains

First rubbing sign on this tree.  Based on height we initially deduce a deer, but we found some long hairs so we changed our guess to an elk.

* Important notice about nature explorers Tuesday*

With our nature explorers moving to Tuesday, all students that purchased hot lunches for Tuesday will need to bring a bagged lunch on our walking field trip, but they will get hot lunch (pizza) on Thursday instead.

One other reminder - this field trip is outside all day.  Appropriate clothing and footwear will be very important, as well as enough food and water for the day.  Please come and join us if you can.  We'd love to have you!

Thanks to the Banff Center for our great wolf pack mask making!  If you are heading to the Halloween Howl, bring these hoods along!

Wednesday, 7 October 2015

Classroom volunteer opportunities.

  • Tomorrow from 1:00-2:00 the Banff Center is coming by with supplies for making masks.  I'm not sure what types we are making, but if you'd like to come and join in the fun during this time we'd love to have you.
  • Next Week (Tuesday) is our next Nature Explorers field trip.  We'd love to have you!  Please send me an email if you can join us.
We spent some time this afternoon adding assignments to our portfolio.  Each student should have in their agenda a completed prompt for:  an assignment they are proud of, and one they could have done better on.  Please have them tell you a little more about these assignments.

We update our portfolios every couple of weeks.  If you ever want to stop in and take a look at your child's portfolio you are always welcome to drop by after school, or even to request that it go home overnight.

We have been designing rain gauges in Science.  They are to be made of recycled products, can measure precipitation and cannot easily tip.  Each Rain Gauge should also have a unique name and jingle to go with its ad.  Here are some samples created by our Smart Cookies:

Ethan, Eli and Gabe.B
Justin and Raymond
Anika, Elora and Nicole
Foster and Wyatt
Jeremy and Connor
Josh R and Andrei
Norah and Rae

Friday, 2 October 2015

Just a few reminders for the weekend:
- please return health unit consent forms
- remember picture day is on Tuesday
- and please check with your child to see if they are one of the five students that still owe me a little bit of unfinished work.
- finally - ask your child to explain to you these great science words: saturated, precipitation and condensation. How do they relate to water in our world?
If you haven't been into the school, or heard at home about our latest art project here is a sneak peak. There are still more to be finished and added but what a get 3D effect!
