Electric car supply orders have arrived!  A small, reusable bag (think Lululemon size) or a shoe box are needed to keep everyone's supplies in one place (if you have extras that would be great if you're willing to share).

Also, if you have been collecting supplies to build car bodies, please send those in at the same time.
Coming home tonight:

  1. Final book orders of the year.  Due back by next Wednesday at the latest.
  2. Health permission form (Body Science/Human sexuality).  Please return with a signature by next Wednesday as well.  Give me a call or stop by the classroom if you have any concerns or you would like to talk about this.

Can you help by volunteering to be a group leader that day?  We will be leaving from the school just after attendance and returning just before the end of the school day.  You would need a bag lunch, rain boots and clothing appropriate to the weather (which we'll hope is a lot better then what happened last time!)
Please send me an email or a note in your child's agenda if you can come along.
We'd love to have you!
* We are back on schedule with a full week of school so new reading records have been handed out and need to be completed and handed in by next Monday.  Just a reminder that these are one way to show understanding of books that students are choosing for themselves so I am looking for answers that are as complete and specific as possible.  There will only be a couple more this year so I've asked everyone to really focus and do their very best on them *

Thursday: Science electricity and magnetism exam - please see the study guide handed out earlier last week and the study notes in Drive and posted on the blog last Friday.

Friday: Spelling test and assignment #2 are due Friday morning.

We've been working in study groups in class to help each other prepare and collect information to practice for our science test next Thursday. These study notes help to address the main points from the study guide. I've also added quite a few comments to direct students to give more information, or to help them focus on the right pages of notes during their independent study.
If you are studying at home these can be a big help for you.  Please follow the links below to any of these guides:

Next Thursday, June 1st students will have a unit test for our electricity and magnetism unit.  Today we will be working in study groups to collect the most important pieces of information from our units and notes and we will be working together to check for accuracy.  Once groups finish these notes they will be available to everyone.  Each student was also provided with a study guide to help them to prepare at home. All the information that they need (at our grade level) is based on the notes and labs we complete in science class. Parent help with study skills and quizzing are always greatly appreciated!
Electricity & Magnetism Study guide

  • What is a magnetic field?  What does it look like around a bar magnet and a horseshoe magnet?
  • Can a magnet be created? How?
  • Given a situation (described or pictured) tell why it is dangerous and what you should do to be safe? (look back at your Safety Rules worksheet)
  • What is an insulator? A conductor? (be able to give examples of each)
 A circuit? A current?
  • What type of circuit must you have for electricity to flow through it?
  • What direction does current flow?
  • Given a picture of a circuit tell me if the light will turn on.
  • Know the symbolic way of diagramming parts of a circuit. (circuit symbols)
  • Explain what a switch is, how it works and one way of making one.
  • What is a series circuit? How does it work? What are some uses for it? (advantages, disadvantages)
  • What is a parallel circuit? How does it work? What are some uses for it? (advantages, disadvantages)

This week's important dates and deadlines
  • Please remember to send in electric car part orders tomorrow (I doubled checked with our fabulous office staff and though cheques are preferable we can also accept exact change).
  • There will be no new reading records or spelling this week due to the short week but story good copies need to be finished by Thursday at the very latest.
  • Thursday is also instrument tryout day in music class!
Hi everyone.  I am VERY sorry to say that the weather is choosing not to agree with us for our wetland trip tomorrow.  We have confirmed with Kananaskis as well that we can rebook for the alternate date of June 15th.  Let's all cross our fingers for a sunny clear day instead.

Attached is the actual weather warning in effect so that you can understand our reason for cancelling.  Volunteers - I am so SORRY!  I hope that you can make it work to join us on the 15th instead.  If not, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you to everyone for your flexibility.

Special weather statement in effect for:
  • Kananaskis Improvement District near Highwood House
  • Kananaskis Improvement District near Kananaskis Village
  • M.D. of Bighorn near Canmore Exshaw and Ghost Lake
  • M.D. of Bighorn near Ghost River Wilderness
An abrupt change in the weather is coming to most of Alberta tonight into Wednesday.

A strong low pressure system is forecast to develop by this evening west of Edmonton near the BC border. This low will then move east-southeast through the province. As it does so, a big change in the weather will occur.

An area of rain will move into west-central parts of the province on Tuesday night, into the Capital Region by Wednesday morning, and to the Saskatchewan border byWednesday evening. The heaviest rain will extend from Hinton and Grande Prairie eastward to Edmonton, Cold Lake and Lloydminster. Current indications are that rainfall amounts will be in the 30 to 40 mm range, but some areas of 50 to 75 mm are possible, especially with any thunderstorms embedded in the rain.

In addition, higher elevations of the foothills and mountain parks to the west of Edmonton and Calgary may see the precipitation change over to snow late Wednesdayovernight. Current indications are that some parts of these regions may receive 5 to 10 of snow by Wednesday morning.

Finally, this system will bring strong winds to much of the province. Beginning Wednesday afternoon much of east-central Alberta will likely see northerly winds with gusts up to 100 km/h.

I hope everyone has a sun-filled and fun May long weekend.  A few reminders since there are many important dates next week.

We come back to school Tuesday.
Car supply orders with cheques made out to the school are due Wednesday.
Wednesday is also our Wetland field trip with 5B.  Students will need a bag lunch, a full water bottle, rubber boots and appropriate clothing to be outside all day.

What a great week we'll have!

We were building switches today in Science.  Take a look at our twitter feed to see a few pictures, or follow the link to look at all of the different styles of switches that we created!

Sent home last night were two very important pages with information about electric car building in grade five. In case you didn't get a chance to see them, here are the same copies.  Please return cheques and order forms by next Wednesday.

Dear Parents and Guardians:
Last week your child participated in a presentation by
George Pastirik of Science Is... The presentation focused on the
final project in our Using Electricity unit, which is building an
electric car.  Through the presentation students learned about basic car
structure, building principals, and they collected ideas for their own car designs.

All students will be creating their own car during class time.  We will be using primarily recycled items that you could help collect at home (cardboard or coroplast, milk lids, skewers and straws are especially useful).  Other supplies like motors, pulleys and wires are also available to borrow from the school though students are encouraged to purchase their own if they would like to keep the items.

For purchase information and pricing, please see the order form from Science Is…  Please make your cheques payable to the school (we will make one large deposit to George Pastirik after all order forms are received).

You can help  as well by collecting supplies to send in or by volunteering your time (and glue gun) to come and help in our classroom once we start building. If you are interested in joining us, please contact your child’s teacher.

Please return your completed order form and a cheque made out to our school by May 24th if you plan to order supplies.

Thank you!

May 15-18th (no school for students on Friday)

- No new reading records were handed out today due to disruptions last week and our short week.  Everyone is encouraged to keep reading, and any old reading records can be turned in by Thursday.
- Math weekly #11 assignments are also due Thursday

Other important information - we are nearing the end of our legend writing assignment.  Most students are now typing up their good copies.  Please check in with your child about their progress, and if they are working on the computer already be sure to ask them to read what they have! :)  And finally, this wednesday is the final round of grade 5 immunizations.  Please remind your child to wear short sleeves (or a shirt underneath a sweater) and they are welcome to bring a little comfort stuffy if it will help them.

Thanks and have a great week and upcoming long weekend!

A big thank you goes out to Naashki and her family for the very thought provoking presentation this morning on truth and reconciliation!  They all did a very good job of sharing their personal experiences around residential school, and their impact on our communities and first nations people, in a way that was meaningful.  Our students also did a fabulous job of showing respect and asking thoughtful questions at the end of the discussion.

Monday, May 15th we have been invited to a presentation directly linked to our Social studies curriculum which looks at understanding the the lives and stories of the aboriginal people of Canada.  This has been made possible through the focus and drive of a grade six student here at LGMS and we look forward to supporting her, and getting a chance to learn and experience first hand the information that she and her grandmother will share.

Our legends are coming along and lots of great story ideas have been developing in class!  Please take a minute tonight to ask your child to show you (or tell you) how the beginning of their story starts.  You should be able to identify the main character(s), the setting (somewhere in Canada) and the problem of the story.  If not - please ask your child to explain those three things to you.

Important dates this week:
Tomorrow we have a presenter coming from Calgary to introduce the topic and tools for building our electric cars.  This is a super cool project that requires a lot of creative thinking and problem solving.  Keep an eye out for information about ordering these kits a little later this week.
Friday In spelling we are working on list 10 and the assignment that is homework for it is assignment #1 (we have looped back to the top of the assignment list and will be continuing in order)

What a grand finale on the steps of the civic centre in Canmore for Music in May.
A collaboration of LGMS and ERS students along with students from Banff and Exshaw.  If you didn't have a chance to come downtown and join us here it is for all of you to see!

Canadian Pacific Railway musical presentation this morning.
These talented presenters gave us great information about the forming of the national railroad along with music and humour!  Here are a few pictures of the event.
