This morning we were creating Halloween creatures to use for a writing assignment.  Take a look at all of these imaginative creations!

Thank you to everyone that placed Scholastic Book Orders.  Using some points from last year, plus the points that we earned on the last order, I was able to buy all of these books to add to our classroom library.
Happy Monday -  I hope that all of you enjoyed the nice weather that we had over the weekend, it looks like we're in for real winter type weather this week!

This week's homework is Math weekly #4 and will be due Thursday since there are no regular classes for students Friday.

Also a reminder that Parent-Teacher-Student interviews are this Wednesday and Thursday evening as well as Friday morning.  Please help us all to keep on time and be courteous of each other by knocking at the beginning of your appointment time if the appointment before you hasn't yet wrapped up.

Also - Tuesday is Halloween.  Students are invited to dress up for the afternoon so please send costumes in backpacks for the morning.  Please also be mindful that we are a safe and caring school, costumes should reflect that belief and weapons should be left at home.

There will be a parade in the gym starting near 1:00 and a 4/5 dance after that going until 2:00.

Tomorrow is PJ day in our classroom!

Earned by working as a team to read to the roof, every person in our classroom helped to build our giant stack of books so everyone can wear PJs tomorrow if they would like :)  I will also be bringing a homemade cookie treat to add to the celebration.  I'm so proud of all of our readers!!

Our big classroom news for this week is our technology update.  Our older model SmartBoard had been getting dimmer and fuzzier so over the weekend it was replaced with a wide (TV) screen instead! Though it's not quite ready to use it will sure make seeing projects, documents and our science videos much clearer!

This week's homework assignment is the third assignment in spelling along with studying this week's words.

Also a reminder that that Novel reviews were handed out last week.  Students have until Nov.7th to complete them.  They can be worked on both at home and at school so please help your child to make sure that they are here in class each day.

Thursday, 19 October 2017

Please help your child to be prepared.  Today I handed out, and we discussed, an upcoming Novel Review assignment (like a book report).  The due date is Nov.7th but it's important to have an appropriate reading level novel in mind for completing the assignment. If it's a book that has recently been finished some re-reading might be needed to focus on the main events for example.

Follow this link to AR book finder which is needed to find the GE (Grade equivalent)/BL(book level)
And here is a link to the Novel Review assignment (paper copies were handed out in class)

Happy Monday!

Today we were fortunate to welcome Carter and Victor to our classroom!  They will be here for the next two weeks joining us from China.  I'm very proud of all of the great peer helpers and groupmates in our classroom that helped to show these boys around and made them to feel welcome.

Coming home tonight should be the wind vane that we made last week and tested today.  Please have your child explain this device to you and how they designed it.

Dates this week:

  • Tomorrow (Tuesday) book orders are due
  • Wednesday - small tin cans are needed for Science (clean and the labels removed please)
  • Thursday - Reading records are due (parents, please sign these once you have looked through them with your child)
  • Friday - math weekly #3 is due
Also - Parent-teacher-student interviews are coming up the end of this month.  Thank you to all of you that have send in requests for your time slots.  I have confirmed and sent all of these home, you should have seen the same form with your confirmed time written on it.  If you have not, please let me know.

Thank you!

Please help us to welcome two exchange students from China to our classroom from Oct. 16 - 26! These two young gentlemen, Dongyue (gr.5) and Guanyang (gr.4) will be joining our classrooms each morning, then heading out with the other exchange students in their group for activities in the afternoon. I'm sure their time here will give us all many opportunities for growth and better understanding of each other and our cultures!

Coming home tonight - forms for booking parent-teacher-student interviews.  I will be filling slots on a first come, first serve basis.  Please feel free to return the paper form to me, or send me an email with your top 3 time choices.  I'll do my best to accommodate everyone.

If your family requires two separate interview times, please let me know and I can send an additional form or email.

We will be doing Scholastic book orders in our classroom this year.  I usually send out an order about every two months.  Did you know that classroom teachers earn points for all of the dollars that you spend through Scholastic?  That is the main way that I grow our classroom library by spending those points to buy more books for us to share.

If you are interested in ordering I recommend paying online and sending me the order form with the reference code and order clearly filled in.  If paying online isn't an option, please make cheques payable directly to Scholastic Canada.

You should see a flyer coming home tonight.  Orders with payment to be completed by Oct.17th.  If you have any questions, please let me know and thank you.

Happy Tuesday.  I hope that everyone had a great long weekend!

Hmmm.  Perhaps those videos are a little too large. They looked pixelated when I took a look. If the same thing happens for you try them this way instead.  Follow the link to see the video.

Gr.5 The Magic Flamingo
Happy Thanksgiving weekend.  Here are a few quick update videos from things that we did today! (I'm not sure if these will work from your email, but if not please check them out on our blog).

I am thankful every day for the wonderful class that we have this year.  I hope that you all have many things to be thankful for as well and that you are able to take a minute to reflect on them.  See everyone Tuesday.

Our fabulous 4s ordering and reading really big numbers!

And our fantastic 5s showing off their reader's theater skills.

We have started 2 new practice sites at school this week.  One is an app that our class is doing a trial of called Fluency Tutor.  It helps students to gain confidence reading out loud and they can record their readings for me to hear and give feedback on.  The other is called Study Ladder and this is a site that students can access from home as well.  By going to assigned tasks students access things I have assigned to them (currently just reading comprehension), but they can also choose practice in other subjects as well.  Whatever work they are completing I have access to see how they are doing.  Login information and passwords were handed out today.  Many students chose to attach them to their agenda so that they have access at school and home.

Also - just a final reminder that this week's homework, math weekly #2 is dues by Friday at the latests.

Monday, 2 October 2017

Thanks to everyone that had supplies to send in to help us build our weather devices this week.  We now have lots of cups and straws.  If you have pen lids, straight pins, cardboard or string though we could still use those!

So far this week:
Wednesday: Reading Records and maps of Canada are due.  Also it is Walk to School Day and gr.5 first round of innoculations
Friday: Math weekly #2 is due, half day Friday
