Newest reading records were handed out in class yesterday and are due to be completed by next Thursday, Dec.7th.

Also - in class we have been researching and working hard on our science projects related to how humans impact weather.  Presentations for these need to be complete and ready to go for next Tuesday.

One more thing to start thinking about and collecting.  For a Christmas art project each student needs one small, clean glass jar with the label removed.
A baby food jar, or other small glass jar is ideal

Classroom updates for this week:
This week we will be starting two separate projects that may involve group work.  In Social studies students will be working in a group of 4 - 5 to research, collect and present information about a specific physical region in Canada.  The links to the information for this work can all be found on our classroom blog on the Social page underneath The Canadian Regions.  At the end of this project all students will be asked to self reflect on their group work skills, as well as to confidentially peer assess their group members using the following group work rubric.

In addition, our final weather project relates to how humans have an impact on weather.  This is an individual project, or can be completed with one other partner.

We have talked extensively at school about being positive, contributing members during group work, and I'm so proud to see some young leaders developing in the classroom that work well with everyone and make an effort to stay focused and positive.  A short conversation at home to reaffirm these ideas would be greatly appreciated to help everyone to succeed!

Finally - Reading records will be handed out tomorrow and due back next week.  This week's homework assignment is Math Weekly #6 and is due on Friday as always.

Have a great week everyone!

Just a reminder that poinsettia orders are due to the office by tomorrow.  This fabulous fundraiser can help to spread holiday cheer in your home and it helps to support our music program too!

This week is Bullying Awareness week.  At LGMS we take the time to reflect on how behaviours affect others and we focus on proactive ways to help everyone feel welcome.  Today we had two wonderful grade 8 students come to share ideas of "power" and what gives a person power.  They also left our students with a kindness challenge.  Complete a poster with planned kind activities to complete this week that will help to make everyone at LGMS feel welcome.  Submissions will be placed up around the school and will also get placed into a draw.

Important due dates this week:

- reading records that were handed out last week are due completed (there have already been 6 periods in class to complete these 5 boxes so thanks to those students that have already finished and handed them in)
-weather quiz - please see the page handed out in class, and the questions posted last week to help guide studying

-Poinsettia orders are due back to the office

 - Spelling with assignment #4 is due

Friday, 17 November 2017

We have finished up our Weather unit in Science so next Wednesday students will have a short quiz to show their understanding.  They have some review questions to help them study and we'll also be doing some studying in class.  Parent help with studying is strongly appreciated :)

Here are the main topics (all information is part of the notes and labs that we completed in class - using Google to search up topics will often give information much more advanced then what we need to know in grade 4 and 5 so it's not recommended)

Monday, 13 November 2017

Happy Monday everyone.  I hope that you were all able to spend some quality family time over our past long weekend.

This week we are returning to our regular schedule after some busy and shortened weeks.  Expect to see math weekly assignment #5 coming home tonight to be completed by Friday. New Reading Records were also handed out today after our daily DEAR time.   Their due date is next Wednesday the 22nd.  As always, there will be time in class to complete these but one reading record box can also be completed in the evening for any fiction story reading of over 10 mins.

Extra school information:

  • The first science fair meeting was today.  These student directed projects are a great way to dig deeper into an interesting subject.  Ms. Richards is the contact teacher for the program this year.
  • Poinsettia order forms went home last week and are due back by Nov. 23rd
  • Legion Remembrance day contest information was also shared with students last week.  Completed entries need to be turned in before Dec.6th

Friday, 3 November 2017

Thank you to everyone that made the effort to stop by and support your child in their learning and goal setting the last few days.  It was great to have a chance to talk with each of you and to celebrate all of the wonderful things that your children are achieving!

Just a quick note that I will be away next week.  Expert teacher Ms. Margie Seto will be in the classroom and can be contacted through the office or by a note in agendas.

For next week (Nov. 6-8)
Monday - please return portfolios once you have had a chance for your child to show you through them and explain the work that they have been doing so far.
Tuesday - Novel Reviews are due (there will be a final classroom period Monday to work on these as well)
Wednesday - Remembrance day ceremony from 9:30 - 10:30.  Poppies will be available for students, if possible, please send some change as a donation.

Also - because of this very short, three day school week, there will be no homework assignments this week. The next spelling and reading records will be handed out Nov.13th.   Try to get out and enjoy the snow instead! :)
