I hope that you are all enjoying the holidays so far.  If your child needs something super fun, but also greatly educational to do during their time off, have them check out Prodigy and sign up for our classroom account by following the directions below.  These sign in instructions are for our class only (the classroom account is mine) so please limit access to only students in our classroom.

This fun online math game helps students to practice basic and more advanced skills that I can assign to them, while they develop their own characters.  It's free to play and both the time they play, and how they do on questions, are tracked for me to access.  It's another great way to practice and improve!

When students sign up and create their classroom account they need to use their real name and information so that it is clear.

Have any questions?  Send me an email :)

Scientific process at it's best today in our class.  Testing the properties of this material to determine if it's a solid or a liquid.

(Answer: It's actually a Non-Newtonian fluid which has the properties of both! It's also easy to make with just cornstarch and water  :)

I'm so happy to see snow this week for a white Christmas!
As the excitement and activities increase in our final week before Christmas please take a few minutes each day to do what you can to help your child continue to succeed this week.  Full and nutritious meals, enough sleep, a hug and a conversation about school... all of these help to keep everyone making good choices and staying in control when events get busy.

Coming home tonight - please take a look at the tasty new fundraiser info "Food is Fuel".

  • Tuesday: Gr.4 Christmas concert 6:30-7:30  (grade 4s please arrive by 6:15.  OUr classroom will be open as a homebase for dropping things off if needed.
  • Wednesday - any reading record improvements (redos) are due
  • Friday - final half day of school.  See everyone back here for 2018 on January 8th

Finally - thank you for every things that you do to support your child and their learning here at LGMS.  May you all have a fabulous Christmas break filled with family, fun and relaxing.

Looking for some Christmas helpers...

Is there any chance that there may be at least 4 wonderful parents (grand parents, aunts, uncles...) that would be willing to volunteer themselves (and an electric frying pan, mixing bowl...) for Friday morning Dec.22.  It would be the first part of the day.  9:00 - 10:30 ish.

I haven't mentioned it to the class yet but I'm hoping to have a Christmas breakfast together the final day before Christmas break.  We can't use the foods room since there are still options that day so I would need some supplies and help for it to work.

If you can come in and help with one cooking group (5-6 kids), please send me an email as soon as possible.  I understand it's a super busy time of year!  If I get enough helpers I'll confirm with you and you can join us to help make, and eat, pancakes.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Image result for math flash cardsMath update
One of the math outcomes for students this year is that they are able to show recall of basic facts.  For grade fours, up to 7x7 and for our grade fives up to 9x9.  Since speed and accuracy of basic facts is directly linked to a person's ability to complete larger, more complex math problems, this is an important outcome that we'll be working on all year.

Today we completed the first formal assessment of these skills.  Not only did each student answer 20 multiplication questions, but they also recorded the time that they spent working on these questions.  The combination of speed and accuracy is the key!

Thursday I will be sending this page home, please take a look at it and consider if there is anything that you can do at home to help your child to work towards those goals of speed and accuracy. Flash cards, dice games and online games are just some ideas to start.  There are some links on the blog under the math tab to help you get started as well :)

Thank you for all that you do to help support and encourage your child to grow and do their very best!!

What an exciting week we have!

First off - weekly homework assignments are suspended until the new year in consideration of all of the activities and family events taking place leading up to the holidays.  Please take this opportunity to connect and recharge as a family.
* An additional note.  Though there will be no weekly classroom assignments, students have been given the opportunity to complete a replacement reading record.  This reading record would replace the mark of a lower reading record and needs to be turned in any time before Dec.20th.   We have discussed this in class and I encourage you to take a look through your child's reading records with them and discuss this possibility as well.   It's ok, and normal, to make mistakes but it's important to take the opportunity for improvement whenever possible :)

Tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon we will be cheering on our athletes at the World Cup events taking place at the Nordic Center.  We will be outside from 1:00-3:00 so please help to ensure that warm clothing is worn.  It may not be too cold out, but even enthusiastic clapping doesn't create a lot of warmth :)    Students are also invited to bring a small thermos with a hot drink with them if they would like.    If you are out and about town tomorrow and you'd like to stop by the Nordic Center we'd be happy to have you join in our cheering!

Thursday - Grade 5 Christmas concert at 7:00.  Students are asked to arrive early.  Mme. Santerre's classroom will be open and available for students to meet in or drop off items.

Friday - half day

* Please let me (and the school) know if you are planning to take your family holidays early.  We will be learning and completing assignments in class up until Dec. 22.  Advance notice helps to make sure there aren't outstanding assignments to complete over the break.

Thank you

The last book orders of 2017 are coming home tonight.  Maybe another gift or stocking stuffer idea?
If you want to make a sneaky gift order you can pay for it online and then send me an email with the item name, number and price.  Don't forget to tell me how to get it to you when it arrives :)

A couple highlights for ideas that have become very popular in class:

  • Wings of Fire series (1-8 available)
  • Raina Telgemeier - graphic novels set
  • I survived (1-15)  This one has become popular with the boys especially
  • There's even one choose your own adventure style book (#59A4), now called "pick the plot"

The turn around is quite short this time so that that orders have time to arrive before the Christmas break.  Tuesday is the deadline for any orders.

Happy reading!
