We're in the last week of March - how did that happen?

I really enjoyed meeting with all of you last week.  It's so rare that we have a chance to all get together and I appreciate you all taking the time to help celebrate all of the hard work and learning that your child has been doing this year!

Don't miss out - this week is the final week of March and I would LOVE everyone to have tried out light painting challenge.  The items so far have been so much fun!!

For our next big Science project we will be creating stop motion shadow animations.

Since this is a tricky business we started yesterday by becoming familiar with the app "stop motion animator", then today we were building short stop motion videos using clay, playdoh or figurines.  For the first day of trials these turned out great!  Check out these little videos by following the link to our folder Stop motion animation trials.  Stay tuned for the shadow version of these videos over the next couple of weeks :)

Apologies for getting this out later than normal this week.  I wish I could say it was because I was out playing in the sun, but unfortunately it's just a busy week!

For the whole month of March we are continuing with our Light Painting Challenge.  If your child hasn't yet tried their hand at a unique light project, please help them to remember this goal.  To see other projects so far, follow this link.

Tuesday:  No weekly homework assignment due to the short week, but Reading Records are due Thursday.  Please be sure as parents to read your child's answers.  Do they give details?  Do they show understanding of the book?  Then sign them and return them to school.

Wednesday:  Book orders are due

  • Parent- teacher-student interviews from 5:00-8:00.  At this time we will be setting final goals for the year and students will have a few items in their portfolio to share with you.  The students are a necessary part of these meetings, so please make sure that they accompany you.  (Interviews Wednesday are scheduled for: Tobin, Cody, Leah, Makyra, Remi, Lyra, Easton and Aiden).  Please email me if you'd like to confirm your appointment time- or see the schedule posted on the blog)
Thursday:  Smoothie day - students should have a small reusable cup with them to participate please
  • Grade 5 math quiz  (a practice test was sent home Monday to help with at home studying and preparation)
  • Reading Records are due
  • Parent- teacher-student interviews from 4:00-7:00.  (Interviews Thursday are scheduled for Shea, Jordan and Marina)

Next Week we have Parent- Teacher- Student conferences.  During these sessions we will be setting goals for the final part of the year and each student will also have a few special assignments or projects bookmarked in their portfolio to change so come prepared to help us celebrate the great learning your child has been doing this year!  You'll notice that Thursday night is pretty bare.  If you are hoping for more time to chat, please let me know and we can move your appointment.

Please double check here for your confirmed appointment time:

Our Light Painting Challenge is well underway.
What amazing ones we have so far!
We have had glow in the dark paint, glow sticks, laser pointers and UV pens all used so far.
Your imagination is the only thing limiting these submissions, and if something you see sparks a new idea, more than 1 product is more than welcome :)

Updates for this week:

After focusing on a full novel over the last few weeks we have restarted Reading Records.  This one was handed out today and is due back by next Thursday at the latest.  These are done primarily in class but can also be completed at home and parents are asked to read over them (look for details) and sign them before they are handed in.

Monday: Tonight students have been asked to find a small figurine of their choice.  Something finger sized or smaller is about right.  A plastic dino, a lego man... student choice.  We'll be using them to track shadows over the day as the light changes.

Tuesday: $2 muffin sale happening at lunch.  All proceeds are going to support Rocky Mountain Adaptive Sports.

Thursday: Smoothie samples will be made and brought to our class.  Sponsored by parent council and created by food students.  Please send a small reusable cup to help us to minimize waste.

Friday: Math Weekly #10 due

Remember, all of March is our Light
Painting Photo Challenge!
We've had 3 wonderful students participate in our Light Painting Activity so far.  If you don't follow our class on Twitter normally you'll want to follow this link to check it out :)
Alternatively - here's the link to the folder of pictures and videos so far.  They are good inspiration for your own photos or videos so keep them coming!!

Light Painting / Glow Stick Challenge

Yes - online challenges can be a good thing!  They encourage us to try something different, and in this case they also practice new skills and show understanding of our light topics in a different way (which we can't really reproduce in school because of the supplies and darkness needed).

Try something new and fun as a family!  This challenge is open for the whole month of March and I'd really like everyone in the class to try at least one.  I'll post on Twitter and our Blog all of the submissions we get, so let's do something positive on social media and show some unique skills :)

Need some help?  There are apps to help, here is one explained: Light painting with an iPhone

Thank you to all of you that replied so quickly about times for Parent-teacher-student interviews.  If you haven't gotten back to me yet, here's what I have left.  You can send the note back to school or send me an email.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing all of you with your children to celebrate all of the great gains they have been making this year!

Updates for this week:

First off - thank you to all the families that have been supporting your child while they studied and prepared for their math test.  I was able to complete marking all of these during the day and I am so proud of everyone! So many improvements and successes to celebrate :)  Students wrote their marks in their agendas so that you can see and we'll be placing the tests in Portfolios right away.

Tuesday:  Appointment booking forms for Parent-teacher-student interviews went home Monday.  Please return these as soon as possible with your top 3 times as well as any comments.  I will return the pages to you with your confirmed time.

Wednesday: Famous Albertan projects in Social studies are due.  If you haven't done it yet, please check in with your child about their choice and progress.

Friday: Spelling #10 is due (this is all about silent letters in spelling so it's a little tricky this week)
