 Week of Sept.22

In math this week we will be completing our first "for marks" assignment.  This is the summative assignment after we've been practicing together in class.  This assignment will focus on showing and explaining numbers and their values. Soon after the next one will focus on comparing, ordering and rounding numbers *In class students will often have practice pages longer than they can complete in school hours.  If they need more practice they are encouraged to bring these home (but please make sure they return as well)

In L.A. this week students will continue to practice some reading comprehension and complete their first summative reading comprehension assignment.

In social studies this week we will be shifting to discussing themes of identity, as well as the meaning and importance of Truth and Reconciliation, in preparation for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tues. Sept. 30th.

Week of Sept.15

Our first outcome in math is all about understanding place value and decimal numbers.  Reading and writing them correctly, ordering and comparing them, showing them in different ways and rounding them.  Did you know that the only time you should say AND when reading a number is when there is a decimal?

For Social Studies this week we will be starting to learn about the types of sources that many social scientists use (primary and secondary sources). We will also be starting our first assignment later in the week.

Monday: Spelling comes home

I hope you and your child have been enjoying the library books that we got to take out.  Reading out loud is a very important part of developing reading skills and comprehension.  Please try to spend some time doing this with your child most nights (and don't forget to ask them questions about the events in their story, information about the characters or connections they have.

Week of Sept. 8

*  If you haven't already, please see the email I sent home about needing volunteers this year.  I have heard from 4 people, but there will be many opportunities (and needs) for volunteers to join us when we go off campus for learning.  So if you are able to join us, please let me know so I can check on your RCMP checks which are required ahead of time.

Monday: Math Weekly homework comes home (students can complete and return this any day this week as long as they are finished and it is turned in first thing Friday morning)

This week in Social Studies we will be finishing our maps, and begin discussing Ancient Civilizations. Students will also be introduced to the social scientists that have helped to build our understanding of Ancient Civilizations.

Tuesday:  - Wind vane building in science

*Library - this will be our first library period for students to take out books.  They are welcome to bring these home but should also always have a reading book at their level in the classroom.  Daily reading (out loud and with an adult so that you can have discussions and answer questions is best) is strongly recommended for everyone.
