   Week of Dec.12:

Monday:  This week's homework is spelling list and assignment #6

* Our first timed multiplication facts were completed last week.  A copy of these will be in your child's portfolio but I am also sending a copy home for you to take a look at and discuss with your child. Please expect your child to bring this home in their agenda tonight.

By the end of grade 4 the expectation is that students have close to instant recall on all facts up to 7 x 7.  This is a still a goal to work towards,  but a number of students would benefit with some nightly practice as well to improve these skills.   We will complete a similar timed page at two other times this year so that you and your child can see their progression and growth.

Tuesday:

Wednesday: PM - final concert practice    7:00-8:00 Christmas concert  Our classroom will be open 15-20 minutes before the start for students to gather, leave their coats and get organized.

Thursday: PM - Beauty and the Beast play at CCHS.  Please be sure that your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for this walk.  If possible, talk to them about safety and keeping up with our class as we will need to be moving quickly to make the beginning of the play, as well as dismissal and buses at the end of the afternoon.

* We could use a parent or two to walk with us for an extra set of eyes and increased safety during this walking field trip.  If you are able to join us, please let me know *

Friday (full day): Spelling assignment and test due first thing in the morning.

We've had some negative recess choices cropping up lately.  If you having a chance in the next few days, can you please talk with your child about what some positive choices for them might be.  What makes an activity a game? What helps us to see that everyone us enjoying themselves?  What should we see or hear?

* Can you help?  It is not quite December yet but we are down to our last half dozen boxes of Kleenex.  If you could please send a box or two of Kleenex in with your child it would be much appreciated.  I'm very happy that everyone is using a tissue, instead of their sleeve or hand, but we will soon be at critical levels*

Week of Oct. 31

Happy Halloween everyone! With Halloween falling on a Monday and a busy week ahead of us that includes Parent-teacher-student interviews, followed by a short week for Remembrance Day we will be taking a short break from our weekly homework assignments.  Please expect to see spelling coming home again next on Monday, Nov.14th.

A reminder that LGMS works at being a healthy school.  This means that items like pop are not welcome on campus and that sugary treats should be kept to a minimum.  We understand that delicious treats come with trick or treating, but please help your child to be present and best able to learn by balancing their sweets with healthy food (one handful of treats maximum per day balanced with a healthy lunch please).

Monday:  No homework this week.  Your child will likely also come home with their Halloween gift from me, 2 containers of sculpting sand, which we used today to create fun creatures that we will be writing about.

Tuesday:

Interview etiquette - please respect everyone’s time by arriving for the beginning of your interview and being mindful of leaving before or at the end of your 15 minutes of booked time.  Your child’s portfolio will be available for you to take home after your interview time to look through more closely if you would like.

Please see the letter below from our very own, amazing Mr.D and his Right From the Start Team.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We have visited several classrooms again this week, embedding the MIndUP Core Practice into our sessions, which is part of an evidence-based program which is rooted in neuroscience, supporting Social Emotional Literacy. The Core Practice involves using a chime and deep breathing. Chimes have been provided to all classrooms along with a script to use consistency.

More information about MindUP: https://mindup.org

We have (re) introduced "Bucket Filling" within LGMS, tailoring our activities and discussions to the needs and developmental levels of middle school students.

Reflective questions for students:

"What does a 'terrific' (positive/supportive/inclusive) classroom look, feel and sound like in grade _____?"

"What does 'Bucket Filling' look, feel and sound like in grade _____?"

Students and teachers have been invited to share their responses on post-it notes. "Student Voice" will inform school-wide positive culture and reinforcement of empathy, kindness and healthy relationships.

Please contact Deren or Adrienne, LGMS Success Coaches, via our email addresses with any questions, concerns or feedback you may have.

 Week of September 19:

Thank you to everyone that has already returned the signed copies of our two field trip forms (sent home last week).  If you haven't done this yet, please get them sent in this week.

*Also a big thank you to anyone that has reached out to volunteer to join our class at the Canmore waste management centre and the Francis Cooke landfill.

Monday:  This week's homework is spelling.  I run three spelling groups in class and last Friday we completed a pretest to help me to find the best fit for your child.  Spelling groups are fluid though and can change as the year goes on based on what I see, or what you or your child feel about the word lists.

Your child should bring their spelling duotang home.  In it you will find this week's assignment.  Students will also have a copy of their word list.  If they have misplaced it you can access it from the LA page of my website (scroll down to spelling).  Please help to guide your child's word practice and also to check in that they are doing their homework according to the instructions (there are always 2 steps to complete).

Hello all of you lovely parents!

In our classroom we have 2 upcoming field trips towards the end of this month and the beginning of next month related to our Science unit called Waste in our World.  We would LOVE to have you join us if possible.

If you are interested in joining us for one of these trips (more details to come) or any other trip this year at LGMS, please let me know so that I can provide you with the volunteer cover letter to have this done at no cost.  I will need the full name of the parent or guardian volunteering for me to complete it for you, then there are some additional forms that you can access from the RCMP website to print off (or in person at the station) that you will need to submit as well.

This process can take any amount of time from a day to 3 weeks to complete so if possible, please let me know early this year and then you will be good for the full school year.  (If you have other children at our school, please let me know what grade they are in so I can include that on the school part of the form as well).

When you have your results from the RCMP please email them to both myself and the office.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night during our Open house from 6:30-7:30 as well.

Sunday, 11 September 2022

  Week of Sept.12:

Congratulations to our School Senator Miles!  Miles was voted by his peers to be our representative on our LGMS school council and I know he will do a fabulous job of giving our class ideas and opinions a voice.  This is a new role this year for one student from each class and involves a commitment to joining the monthly School Senate meeting with Ms.Proudfoot to discuss student related issues.

* A big congratulations also to both Caitlyn and Summer who also put their names forward and were willing to take on this important role.  All three students did a great job of explaining their interest and how they could represent our class. I know each one would have done a great job!!!

Monday:  This week's homework is math weekly.  Your child should bring home their Math Weekly homework folder with a page of 5 math questions for them to complete.  These are due back by Friday morning at the latest but can of course come in sooner:)   Students are encouraged to use any strategy to show their work and families are encouraged to check in and support their child as they begin developing important time management and work habits for positive growth.

Tuesday:  Classroom Book order information comes home.

Wednesday:

Thursday: LGMS open house 6:30-7:30  Please stop by with your child at any point during the hour to tour our classroom, see some of our early projects and of course ask questions! It's SO great to be able to share this together in school so please try to come and join us.

Friday: Math weekly questions are due first thing in the morning.

* Spelling homework is due THURSDAY of this week due to the long weekend *

Monday:  Spelling #13 comes home.   Also in agendas tonight you should find a page that your child completed last week celebrating an accomplishment in school, and a non-academic accomplishment, that they are proud of.

Helping your child to celebrate these achievements, and validating for them the things that they are proud of themselves for, can help them to feel more positive during a time of year they may be struggling in.
