You child should have a tracking booklet coming home with them tonight. Think of all of the points a family ski day in the fresh snow this weekend would earn our school!

We would love it if you would join in the energy challenge with us! It's all about being active and doing things as a family.

Our school goal is 100 000 cubes with grades 4/5/6 students being involved.

Basics = 15 minutes of exercise = 1 cube (do it with a family member you get to x by amount of family members involved - 15 minute bike ride with 3 other family members = 4 cubes!)

A call out for a few supplies that are needed:

Next week in Science we are going to be making kaleidoscopes as we near the end of our Light and Shadows unit.  Each student will need the following supplies:

  • a paper towel tube
  • shiny/reflective material - this makes the inside and creates the fancy shapes using reflection.  Tinfoil can be used, or there is mirrored craft paper, or even the (clean) inside of a chip bag is quite reflective.  The more mirror-like, the better it should work.
  • coloured plastic (translucent) film, or small coloured translucent beads (I have some as well)

Welcome back!  We are on the final stretch of this school year.  At this time of year in math we work through smaller outcomes at a quicker speed so please check in with your child often about what they are working in in class and don't forget those big skills too.  Add, subtract, multiply and divide skills are perpetually important!

Monday  Today we began our novel unit in LA - We will be doing Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry which are both fabulous novels!. We will be working on questions and projects related to it until the end of the school year. After discussing the vocabulary and topics for the two novels, and having time to explore them students chose the one that they want to work on. Please check in with them about their choice and ask them to explain to you why they chose that novel.

It's almost Spring Break!  Classes are over for students at noon tomorrow and we restart together for the last part of the year on April 22nd.

Here's something fun which shows great improvement in everyone's reading level from when we first tried this near the beginning of the year.  Each group chose their own script (you'll notice the lengths are all quite different) for our April Reader's Theater Presentation.  Enjoy watching each one by following the link to the folder.

And I wish you all a wonderful break!

March is over - but if you didn't see the fabulous Light Painting Photo Challenge submissions by the creative students and family in our class, make sure to take a look through this folder of images and videos.

Spring break is just around the corner.  I hope that you all have plans that involve family, fun and relaxation!  Leading up to Spring break there will not be a weekly homework assignment this week, the only thing you should see coming home for completion is the Reading Record due Wednesday.

Monday: For science tomorrow everyone is asked to bring at least 2 small things to test for reflective properties.  If you need some ideas, check out the great brainstorming we did in class!

Tuesday:   10:30 Energy Cube Challenge - Bilingual presentation

Wednesday: RR are due

Thursday:  Desk and locker clean out for spring break (check backpacks - there will likely be some extra supplies, containers or food coming home)

Friday: No weekly homework.  Spring break for students starts at noon today!  See everyone back in class on April 22nd :)
