I hope that everyone has a great Halloween - be sure to ask your child about their Jack-o-lantern mini story that we made in class today :)    Please also help to support your child's best learning next week by limiting the amount of candy you send to school with them - think about balancing out their healthy lunch with a handful (or 5 small pieces)

In Science we have moved into our coding unit - if you'd like some information to access at home, take a look at the technology tab on my website.  The hour of Code is an easy site to access at home and try out these skills.

In Social Studies we are starting a new unit where we will be learning about how Ancient Civilizations decided where to live and how that impacted their lives, with a focus on geography.

 Week of Sept.22

In L.A. this week students will continue to practice some reading comprehension and complete their first summative reading comprehension assignment.

Our first outcome in math is all about understanding place value and decimal numbers.  Reading and writing them correctly, ordering and comparing them, showing them in different ways and rounding them.  Did you know that the only time you should say AND when reading a number is when there is a decimal?

For Social Studies this week we will be starting to learn about the types of sources that many social scientists use (primary and secondary sources). We will also be starting our first assignment later in the week.

Monday: Spelling comes home

I hope you and your child have been enjoying the library books that we got to take out.  Reading out loud is a very important part of developing reading skills and comprehension.  Please try to spend some time doing this with your child most nights (and don't forget to ask them questions about the events in their story, information about the characters or connections they have.

   Week of September 2

Just a reminder that now that our agendas have arrived, please check your child's daily for any important notes or items being sent home.  Once you have done that, please initial that date in their agenda to help me to know that you are aware of upcoming and important items.

Monday: No school - happy long weekend!

Tuesday:   As we continue to work on classroom and school expectations, building connections and relationships and begin learning together, please check in with your child about what is happening in class and have them share a star (positive thing) that they learned or experienced.

Wednesday: We will be starting with our Chromebooks, getting signed in and set up, this week.

Please take a minute to read over the information about technology that I sent home last week (the bright pink page about our classroom) to help you to access your child's Google Classroom, and also talk to your child about positive and safe online behaviours at school.

Thursday: Photo day - Grade 5 pictures will be taken during the morning

Friday (full day):

_________________________________________________________________________

Technology:

First - don’t worry! If you haven’t been using chromebooks or any of the Google apps your child will soon become an expert and be able to help you!  You don’t need a separate chromebook.  For your child to work on assignments at home (from any computer) here are the steps to follow:

-1-  Download the free web browser Chrome

-2- Have your child sign in to the browser.  To do this click “sign in”  or press on the person outline in the top right corner of the web browser.  Then use their Canadian Rockies full email address

(Ex:  xyz1234@edu.crps.ca) and password (we’ll tape this into the back of agendas). * This part can be tricky for kids because school chromebooks automatically add the @edu.crps.ca *

-3- Once they are signed in your computer screen will look like theirs does at school so they (or you) can access the same bookmarks and apps, like Google Classroom and my classroom website, that we will be using during school.

Online assignments will be available in Google Classroom. If your child is away for illness or appointments, please check there first for any work that they can be completing.

We will be working together to develop online skills including digital citizenship. As the year progresses we will be making more use of our Chromebooks and technology.   At home, please be sure to look closely at the technology usage agreement in your parent packages and talk with your child about responsible use of technology.

Tuesday, 26 August 2025

Welcome to our grade 5 class at LGMS!

I look forward to a year of learning and growing with your child!  Thank you so much to everyone that stopped in this morning to say hello.  I hope that you all hear great things tonight at home.  We had a wonderful day together.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here are two letters of introduction for our class this year. (Hard copies will come home with your child as soon as we have agendas delivered).

Mrs. B's Smart Cookies - class information and my contact info.

Ms. Faith Fletcher's intro. letter Ms. Fletcher comes to us from the U of L Education program where she is in her final year.  We are lucky to have her joining us as a teacher in our classroom until the end of December.

Today we went up to ERS to be leaders for our grade 2 buddy class.  We built solar ovens together and then practiced some fire starting skills so we could toast some marshmallows.  Though the weather didn't give us a lot of solar energy (so we left the ovens with the grade 2s to try out later) we had a great time!

Most of our class talked about how positive, fun and helpful their grade 2 buddies were!  Other students highlighted how excited their buddies were when they got a spark while using the flint and steel. Everyone talked about the smiles, fun and celebrations for when each other showed success, or gave their best try :)

We also found some great connections, like Kinsley who was paired with a buddy that also loves pepperoni pizza.

Friday, 28 March 2025

Week of March 31:

We have a short outdoor activity 10:25-12:00 (we're making solar ovens with the grade 2s) this Wednesday at ERS.  It would be very helpful to have another parent or two join us to help us to have one adult per group.  If you have any flexibility to join us, please let me know.  THANKS!

* We are continuing to practice long division (3 or 4 digit numbers divided by single digits).  In grade 5 students are expected to give remainders in their answer (but I have a few students that have been practicing the grade 6 expectations of doing it with decimals instead).  The For Marks for division will likely be next week or quite early the week after.

Coming soon - Our next field trip will be Monday March 24th.  It will be another hike near Troll Falls and will involve some activities around the eagle migration which we'll hope to get to see.  Please watch for the online field trip form coming to you soon, and let me know if you'll be able to join us on this full day outdoor adventure :)

   Week of March 3

A huge thank you to all of the wonderful parents and grandparents that volunteered and helped out with making our ski days so successful!!!   A secondary thank you to everyone that has already reached out about volunteering to help with one of our hikes this month.

I know it's not always possible to join us with work schedules, but your involvement is so helpful for our class, and we love having you join us!

Monday:  Math Weekly # 10 comes home

Tuesday:  Grandpal letter's should be completed by the end of the day.

Hold and Secure drill in the morning.  We'll talk about this at school Monday as well, but if your child tends to get nervous about these drills, please talk a bit at home as well.

Wednesday:   Bankhead fieldtrip with Mr.Kelly for outdoor learning.  Students need good hiking boots (with the fresh snow Monday we might have snow, slush or mud so please be sure they are waterproof) and appropriate outdoor clothing.  Depending on the weather full ski pants might not be needed, but a water resistant pant layer since we'll be sitting on the ground, should be worn at a minimum.  Students need drinks for the day as well as snacks to supplement the hotdog roast we'll have at lunch.

** Ms. Reinhart's class went Monday and reported quite a bit of ice on the trail

*Library - books for renewal or return should be back in the morning

Today's science lab was all about determining if an item was a solid or liquid.  We created oobleck and then tested it out to see which properties fit with what we expect from a solid and liquid.

We discovered that this particular item has a special name and category.  As your child about it!  To take a closer look at all of the fun pictures that went with today's lab, have your child login to their google classroom at home!

Tuesday, 25 February 2025

Have you talked to your child about Pink Shirt Day and it's significance?  Standing up for others, doing the right thing, and helping someone to feel like they are seen and belong, is all part of being an upstander to help fight bullying.
